Social Compliance in Bangladesh's RMG Sector: Case Studies

This collection of case studies documents NUK's approach to social compliance work within Bangladesh's ready-made garment (RMG) sector, drawing on more than three decades of direct factory-level engagement.

Featured cases

  • NUK's long-running partnership with Anowara Group, detailed further in NUK and Anowara Group Review a Decade of Compliance Partnership.
  • The "NUK and SOL's Friendship Project," an early example of connecting factory compliance work with international buyer CSR programs.
  • Coalition-level standards developed through the Social Compliance Initiative Bangladesh (SCIB) and the Bangladesh Garment Workers Protection Alliance (BGWPA).

What the case studies show

Across cases, the most durable compliance gains came from building in-house capacity — training factory compliance and HR officers directly — rather than relying solely on external audits or one-time certifications.

These findings are reflected in ongoing coalition discussions, including the most recent SCIB annual coalition meeting and the BGWPA factory safety roundtable.
